Crystallization of Hard Spheres
We study the nucleation and growth of crystals formed by hard and soft colloidal spheres. Homogeneous as well as heterogeneous nucleation are investigated in our experiments. Heterogeneous crystallization is investigated in the presence of flat and curved walls, the latter being represented by large spherical or cylindrical particles. Depending on their radius of curvature, they either act as seeds and nucleation is enhanced or they act as impurities and crystallization is suppressed.
